Wait, didn’t Alaska already have local Tournament Directors? Well, yes, in that the TDs in Alaska are local to Alaska, but in TD language, there are several types of TDs.
The first type of TD is the Club TD. Club TDs can host events of up to 50 players, or, with an assistant and a computer, they can host an event of up to 60 players.
The second level of TD is the Local TD. A Local TD can host an event of up to 100 players, or, with an assistant and a computer, they can host an event of up to 120 players.
Well, praise God, I just passed my Local TD test with a score of 92%, so we can now host larger events here in Alaska! While most of the time this would not be needed, it may come in handy for events like the state championship, where we hope to have more than 60 players at the event.
There are higher levels of Tournament Directors, but I don’t see the need to have much higher than a LTD in Alaska with our current pool of players. Perhaps someday, if there is more demand, we can work towards a higher level. But for now, we will just work with what we have, and work on serving Alaska’s chess community better.
